Show Notes

In this episode of "Fund Stuff," Andrew Pierno pulls insights from an unlikely source—pickleball—to shed light on the grinding nature of business. Even when your company isn't making TechCrunch headlines or going viral on Product Hunt, Andrew argues that the real work happens during what he calls "peace time." It's all about sticking to the grind, focusing on metrics that matter, and never letting off the gas.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Facing Equally Skilled Players: Just like in pickleball, your business often competes with others who have no obvious weaknesses. The reality is you're in for a grind.

  2. Metrics Matter: Peace time is when you focus on core KPIs. Forget the vanity metrics; focus on what truly propels your business forward.

  3. Routine is Your Ally: Maintaining a steady pace and routine is essential, even when it feels like you're just watching paint dry.

Tune in to learn why you shouldn't let "peace time" lull you into complacency and how focusing on the grind now can pave the way for future success.

Hey, it's Andrew from XO capital. And this week I'm talking about grinding it out most weeks, nothing interesting happens like there's no tech crunch articles. There's no viral videos. It's just kind of steady state. There's incremental features. There's support tickets, modest growth, but nothing crazy happens. This is where the is. And this is what I personally struggle with the most. I tend to think of myself as more of like a wartime person than a peacetime person. Or at least somebody that's more comfortable in war time when, when shit is hitting the fan. It's like, okay. That really focuses me. But peace time is where I struggle the most where it sort of just like, you know, you have to keep going with the things that are, that are sort of working or working a little bit. And I have to be very cautious about how I present metrics to myself so that I don't feel like I'm stagnant or not making progress, progress on anything. So in peace time, these metrics that I need to look at are, are, Maybe trivial, but. I need to see something like user sign-ups, cumulative, right? Going up into the right or even something as simple as get hub commits, just know that the products are making progress in some capacity. Or JIRA tickets, right? There is stuff being pushed out to production. There are new users, there are new customers, just something to validate to myself that progress is being made because I won't often feel like it is just kind of going through the day to day. Without having any kind of like major win. The second piece that helps me through his routine. peace time is not the time to stop doing things like outbound. It's not the time to take your foot off the gas. If there's not an immediate crisis, I tend to get a little bit bored. But this is a really bad habit. And, and a routine really helps me stay, stay focused. So does the team, honestly, having other people to communicate this to, and, and, have them talk through it with you because I'm sure they're probably feeling the same way. But yeah, so we're just grinding it out this week. Nothing interesting. Nothing fancy. This is what most weeks are like. It's just heads down working through stuff.
